Senseo Coffee Maker Review - Senseo New Generation - technology succumbs to the Peter Principle

I have been using Senseo since 2004, first in the U.S., and now in Israel. Even though it is not available in stores in Israel, I have had it shipped over from Europe.

I enjoyed exceptional coffee with the older models (one at home, one at work, and no problems with either). However, my first New Generation began malfunctioning after about seven months of regular use.

As always, I use only filtered water. The blue 2-cup light was the first to malfunction, and it would not allow me to use the 2-cup setting even on a full reservoir.

Then, I would have to jiggle the reservoir every time I set it in place (causing some leakage on the counter).

Then, the 1-cup setting went.

Fortunately for me, Philips, at that time (spring/summer of 2009) was offering a recall for certain models, and mine was one of the models, assembled in Poland. I returned it to Philips for refund of full purchase price (not covering shipping or duty).

I then went on to order a new replacement machine, again New Generation, from Europe. (Once you have purchased extra pod holders, you might as well stay with the same model!) Again I paid shipping and duty.

This time, I de-calcified it more frequently, and again used only filtered water. Six months after receipt, it is malfunctioning in exactly the same way as the first New Generation.

It appears that electronics is the problem, and because of technology, the Senseo has advanced to a level of nonperformance. (The older basic model of Senseo is still working just fine at my office; it's a little noisy and doesn't tell me when the reservoir is empty, and doesn't tell me when to de-calcify, but it gives good coffee.)

For home, I am now switching to another brand entirely, and will never again buy the Philips machine unless they start to sell it locally and would agree to repair or replace it when it malfunctions.
